Joe is crushed when Rose Marie goes off to marry the rich popular jock, Buzz Nelson, but realizes that he must move on. With his flat feet keeping him from fighting in WWII, Joe finds his dream job as manager of Lucky’s Bowling Alley. It’s just him and the ladies as he sings about his new lease on life in this bouncy bowling-themed song.
As manager, Joe has the key to heaven, the key to the shoe room, where all the customers’ shoes are kept. Joe enters his private utopia and runs his nose down the walls lined with stinky shoes. He finds the day’s perfect shoe and inhales deeply. The intoxication has him hallucinating as a tiny jug band appears on his shoulder and the song shifts to a Jug Band Jamboree – complete with kazoo.
Joe composes himself, exits the shoe room and the song shifts back t0 the upbeat jazzy number we opened with. He rushes back over to the bowling lanes where he and the women dance up and down the lanes for the song’s finale. The girls form a group of bowling pins and Joe jumps into a slide, like a baseball player, down the isle knocking them all down. The whole group land in a pile of giggles and laughter with the girl’s legs hanging all over Joe’s smiling face.
