At his shoeshine stand and after shining the shoes of Rose Marie Pedals, his first crush, a teenage Joe sings about his budding love. This turns into a dream-like dance sequence with multicolored lights and a passage of time. The final verse takes place at the senior prom where we find 18 year-old Joe is, once again, hiding. This time he is beneath the bleachers singing to Rose Marie as she dances with her date, the rich and handsome Buzz Nelson. The song ends with Joe pining for his love, her feet and the words of romantic hope, “someday they’ll be mine.”
