Set mostly in the 1940s, “Love Is Afoot!” is a musical romantic comedy about two love-struck sweethearts and their struggle to be together. The story chronicles the life and times of Joe Smoot-Nibley and his journey for acceptance and quest to find his “sole-mate.”
Joe’s a hopeless romantic, in love with the girl of his dreams and more specifically, her feet! That girl is Rose Marie Pedals, and she loves, adores, and understands Joes’ desires because she’s got a “thing” for feet herself.
But because it’s labeled a forbidden love by society and because they’re from different socio-economic classes, they’re pulled apart again and again. It’s through sage love advice from a magical Italian shoe cobbler and through song and dance, that they learn about the importance of acceptance, love and staying true to oneself.
“Love Is Afoot!” offers something different. Foot and shoe love are used as a metaphor for anyone who’s ever felt different or been discriminated against and we illustrate this sentiment in the most outrageous way possible. Plus, by setting the story in the 1940s, it not only heighten the tension but it allows us to play with some taboos in the silliest way possible.
“Love Is Afoot!” pays loving tribute to Golden Era of musicals of 1940s and 1950s, so all the music of the musical is Big Band, Swing and hot Jazz. Through the incredible talents of Perry Sachs (SNL/Happy Madison), Tim Davis (Glee/Boy Band) and the legendary jazz musician Kevin Guillaume, the “Love Is Afoot!” soundtrack contains 13 songs & 5 instrumentals. Over 60 minutes of music!
With an unparalleled level of stress, anger and fear in the country and the world right now, people need an escape hatch. They need a reminder on how to love one another and mostly they need to laugh again. Given the funny escapism that “Love Is Afoot!” offers, it’s the perfect ‘feel-good’ antidote for these troubled times.
“While our irreverent comedy may be the yoke that steers “Love Is Afoot!,” music is the engine that makes it fly!”
-P. Sachs
